Funding & deadlines

Money should never stop you from studying.

South Africa has generous government funding and industry bursaries — most learners don't apply because they don't know about them. Here's the full picture.

NSFAS — The National Student Financial Aid Scheme

NSFAS is South Africa's biggest student funding programme. It pays tuition and accommodation at all 26 public universities and 50 public TVET colleges. There is nothing to pay back while you study — it's converted to a bursary if you graduate.

Who qualifies
Households earning R350 000 or less per year. Students with a disability: up to R600 000.
What's covered
Tuition, registration, accommodation, meals, learning materials, and a monthly personal-care allowance.
When to apply
Applications usually open in September and close end of January. Apply the year before you start.
Don't skip university applications while waiting for NSFAS. Apply to your chosen university AND to NSFAS at the same time — one doesn't depend on the other. If NSFAS comes through later, they pay the university directly.

Major bursaries worth applying to

Above NSFAS's income threshold, or want more coverage? These are the biggest private and industry bursaries in South Africa.

Tip: Most large SA companies (Standard Bank, FNB, MTN, Anglo American, SABMiller, PwC, Deloitte, KPMG) run their own bursary programmes. Google "[company name] bursary 20XX" or check their careers page.

University application deadlines

Typical application windows for the 26 SA public universities. Confirm the exact current-year dates on each university's admissions page — programme-specific deadlines can be earlier.
